Horse back riding is a lifestyle for many local residents in the area. Many of whom board and raise their horses right at their residential properties. Public lands for riding abound on both BLM and JTNP locations. There are provisions for trailering in horses to areas at trailheads. There are also horse rentals and boarding facilities. With an elevation at 4,000 feet and above riding can be multi seasonal in the Joshua Tree - Morongo Basin area.

Pioneer town-Pipes Canyon
Pioneer town at 4,500 feet is an equestrian community. It is also quaint little faux western town that is a famous movie set location for many films by Roy Rogers and Gene Autry etc. It is located just outside of Yucca Valley in Pipes Canyon. There is water and ample space for parking trailers near the Palace Road House and Saloon. California riding and hiking trails are immediately near by. The rides go through a Joshua tree forest and the area is surrounded by the Saw Tooth Mountains and Mount San Gorgonio Looms at 11,499 Feet in the distance at the pinnacle of the San Bernardino National Forest. You could ride throughout pipes canyon to the north and all the way up through Burns Canyon to Big Bear in the mountains.
